Know What to Look for

Nursing home abuse and neglect is far too common. Knowing what signs could indicate abuse or neglect of your loved one can be crucial in determining a problem.

Some common signs of nursing home abuse include:

  • signs of anemia
  • unnatural bruising anywhere on the body
  • unexplained and excessive weight loss
  • poorly maintained surroundings, signs of rodents or bugs
  • signs the resident has not been properly cleaned or attended to
  • personal items such as clothing or valuables that are missing, soiled or broken
  • odors not consistent with a well-cared for client can come from wounds
  • untreated medical problems such as bedsores, or wounds

Nursing home neglect or negligence commonly occur because the staff has not followed the standard of care mandated by the State of Georgia. When left unaddressed, issues occurring with the fragile elderly can quickly turn catastrophic.  Untreated wounds, missing, or mistiming medications and improper nutrition are all seen commonly in nursing homes.  Residents who have food allergies or intolerance must have consistent accommodations made.  As we saw recently, improper quarantine protocol when a virus is circulating throughout a facility can result in tragic deaths.  Failure to maintain the safety of the resident is also a problem in nursing homes.

Residents' who are not adequately supervised can fall and injure themselves.  Other times, attendants who are tasked to move a resident might not have the strength or technique to do so safely.  We've seen cases where resident's wheelchair wheels were not locked when the client was left unattended, or while in a transport vehicle, resulting in chairs flipping over or rolling into things. Alzheimer's patients require a special standard of care to keep them from wandering away.  Regardless of the cause of the injury, when you enter into a contract with a nursing home facility, they are legally bound to provide your loved one with a specific standard of care as outlined by the Georgia Department of Community Health.

Are you convinced that someone you love has suffered injury or abuse due to the neglect of their care, staff or facility?

After being involved and a five car accident I contacted Casey Stevens law firm. I was given his number by a fellow coworker at my job who had used him in the past and was very satisfied with his services. The car accident included myself my husband and my son, the accident was determined to be the fault of two drivers involved in the accident. Casey personally came to my home the next day and said down with me and my family at the kitchen table and went over all the events of the accident. There were months and months of physical therapy, doctor visits injections and while my son had to have his mouth wired after having his jaw broke in three places. Casey and his staff worked continuously on our case and after it was all said and done, they where able to get us over $300,000 in damages. I really want to Thank Casey Stevens and his staff for always being available for phone calls and answering any questions I might have. I will continue to recommend potential clients to Casey Stevens law firm. Nina F
