How Experts Help Us Help You in a Car Accident Case

Did you know you may not be the “at-fault” driver in a car wreck, even if you pulled out in front of oncoming traffic? In fact, just recently we had a client severely injured when she entered a roadway and was t-boned by another car. By interpreting collision data collected from the on-coming car’s computer, the accident reconstruction experts were able to prove the driver of the on-coming car was in fact speeding 30 miles over the speed limit at the time of impact and therefore was responsible for the car collision.

Event Data Recorders (EDR) Help Our Clients Win Big

The Event Data Recorder (EDR) is known as the “black box” of a vehicle. It is part of the Airbag Control Module (ACM) in most cars. The EDR records information about the airbag system at the time of impact. Not only can it provide information about the vehicle’s speed at the time of impact, but can also provide the speed before impact, the speed of braking, whether the driver was wearing a seat belt, and even the position of the throttle of the vehicle.

The ACM is meant to tell the car whether the impact was severe enough to deploy airbags, but the information it receives is stored in the EDR and is very useful to a car accident lawyer when determining who is responsible for the car crash.

What Car Accident Data is Recorded by an EDR?

EDR’s typically collect and store the following information:

  • Engine speed – RPM
  • Pre-impact vehicle speed
  • Pre-impact brake status
  • Time between impact and each airbag deployment
  • Ignition cycle count at event time
  • Ignition cycle count at investigation
  • Whether the passenger airbag was enabled or disabled
  • SIR Warning Lamp status (or/off)
  • Whether the Driver’s airbag was enabled or disabled
  • Throttle position (drive, neutral, park)

People who are injured as the result of a negligent driver are entitled to compensation for their injuries. Car accident attorney Casey W. Stevens has six Georgia locations to serve you: Atlanta, Dawsonville, Woodstock, Canton, Alpharetta and Suwanee. If you can’t come to us, we’ll be happy to come to you. Call today – 770-408-6364.
