What should I do after a car accident?

Here are some important things you should do to help ensure you receive fair compensation.

1. Call 911 and ask for the police and an ambulance if needed.

2. Take photographs accident scene, including damage to the vehicles and road conditions. If possible, do it before the vehicles are moved.

3. If you are able to at the time, be sure you or a witness speaking to the officer are able to clearly describe the cause of the accident. If possible, review the report to ensure the officer has documented everything to your satisfaction.

4. Obtain the names and phone numbers of any and all witnesses.

3. Get a copy of the police report. The police report will contain important information, including the other driver's insurance information, citations issued, diagram of the accident scene, etc.

5. If you were not transported by ambulance, and you are feeling pain, visit your doctor's office or the emergency room as soon as possible. Do not ignore the pain, with the hope it will get better on its own. It is better to get it checked out to be sure you are O.K., and therefore eliminate any possible questions regarding the cause of the injury. A delay in seeking medical treatment may, in some cases, jeopardize your ability to prove your injuries resulted from the accident and not something else.
